We would like to thank you for continuing our series, Healthy Methods for Keeping the Memory of Your Loved One Alive during the New Year. For the past several weeks, we have offered numerous tips on how to keep your memories near and dear to your heart while coping with the grief of losing someone close to you. You have learned to avoid completely letting go, that you should focus on remembrance, the importance of making changes in your life, how to create a memory basket, and the importance of developing rituals as a coping mechanism. In this final installment of this series, we will expound on basic tips that may be used to cope with your loss in a positive and productive fashion. These tips are as follows:

  • You should always ensure that you allow yourself to experience the emotions that go along with the loss of a loved one. It is important to avoid allowing others to dictate how you should feel. The simple fact of the matter is, you will feel what you feel. You should allow yourself this because it is necessary to the normal grieving process.
  • When you lose a loved one, there is no time limit on how long you will experience grief. It is a process and you should be patient with yourself. The process must go on as long as you need it to and you should accept however long that takes.
  • You should never be embarrassed or ashamed in how you feel. You should make a point to reach out to others for support. You should feel that it is acceptable to talk about the loss that you have experienced. You should talk about all of the memories that you have. Expressing your sadness is acceptable and should be done.
  • Make a special effort to take care of yourself. This means that you should make certain that you eat right, sleep right, and maintain an active lifestyle. In fact, if you are able to find a new hobby that is physical in nature to deal with your grief, you should do that. Additionally, you should permit yourself to indulge in comforting naps, hot baths, and even foods that you love. At all costs, it is important to avoid indulging in alcohol, drugs, and other types of dangerous substances.
  • Finally, find a creative outlet for your grief. For example, have remembrance jewelry created, make a scrapbook of memories that relate to your loved one, paint a little, color a little, sing a little, write a little….Do whatever you feel that it takes to cope with your grief.

Coping with the loss of a loved one and keeping the memories alive may prove to be a challenging endeavor; however, it is a necessary one.
